When it comes to extracting sheet piles, trench sheets, pipe piles, and other types of temporary pilings, specialized equipment such as pile extractors, clamshell dredges, and crane-mounted vibro-hammers are often employed. Vibration is often used in combination with extraction to minimize soil friction and facilitate the removal of piles. For sheet piles, trench sheets, and wooden piles, as well as some ground-driven piles, vibratory equipment can be attached directly to the pile to induce oscillation. However, for larger and more deep-seated piles, using a crane or excavator to apply the vibratory force may be necessary.


When selecting vibratory equipment for pile extraction, several factors must be considered, including the type of pile, the site conditions, and the soil composition. For example, in softer soils, a lower frequency vibratory hammer may be sufficient, whereas in harder soils, a higher frequency hammer may be necessary

Excavator-mounted Vibro-Hammers – Using an excavator, larger hammers equipped with the correct fittings, such a double clamp, can also be used with tubular piles and pile casings. Vibro-Hammers are fully compatible with excavators' hydraulic systems and do not require to be modified in order to operate effectively. This system drives and extracts multiple pile types including sheet piles, H-piles, and I-beams.

Hydraulic pile extraction operates on the same principle as a standard hydraulic jack - applying downward force on a reaction point to generate upward lifting force. There are two primary configurations: reaction frame systems and self-anchoring systems. The extraction force is limited by the bearing capacity of the supporting soil - in soft or saturated conditions, larger bearing plates are necessary to distribute the load and prevent punch-through failure. The required plate area must develop reaction forces equal to or exceeding the anticipated extraction resistance.


Self-anchoring or "pitch-and-pull" systems eliminate the need for ground-bearing plates by clamping onto adjacent driven piles as reaction anchors. The extractor grips multiple pile heads surrounding the target pile and jacks against them to generate vertical pull. However, this method has an inherent limitation: as extraction force increases, the anchor piles experience additional downward loading and may settle further into the soil. This settlement directly reduces the effective stroke length and available extraction capacity of the system, which must be accounted for during planning and sequencing operations.

Although vibratory hammers installed on excavators produce less noise and vibration than crane-suspended machines, hydraulic extraction systems are better for severely limited areas since they produce very little noise and nearly no underground vibration while in use.
